Pride take early lead but fall 3-1 to No. 16 Grand View
DES MOINES, Iowa - Back on the road for the first time in just under two weeks, the Clarke University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 final to No. 16 Grand View University on the road on Thursday evening after that game was postponed on Wednesday due to thunderstorms in the area.
Facing their third-straight NAIA ranked opponent in the tough Heart of America Athletic Conference, the Pride were able to strike first when William Arana scored his second goal of the season in ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead early, similar to their matchup against Missouri Valley College last Saturday.
Also similarly to last Saturday, Clarke would concede goals back to their opponent twice to allow the Vikings to take a 2-1 lead when Tim Schoorlemmer tied the game just about a minute later then Justin Figaroa would make it a 2-1 game in the second half.
Figaroa would score his second goal of the game and extend the GVU lead to two goals less than a minute after his first goal when Schoorlemmer and Cuba Bak Sorensen assisted on Grand View's third goal in the 60th minute.
Corner kicks were even between the two ranked foes at 7-7 with the two teams having a close margin between shots and fouls committed where the main difference in the team stats came in the saves department where GVU keeper Luis Helm made six saves on the seven shots on goal from CU and Lucas Fontana made three saves on the six shots on goal against in the 90 minutes.
Clarke's Hector Medrano and Alfonso Gonzalez took 11 of the team's 16 total shots and five of the team's seven shots on goal but neither upperclassman were able to find the back of the net after Medrano's two goal game on Saturday against the Vikings.
Pride men's soccer will welcome the Central Methodist University Eagles to Burrows Field on Saturday afternoon with a scheduled 3:00 p.m. CT kickoff on Sept. 20 in Dubuque.
