Pride come back from down four to earn overtime win against Herkimer
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Playing their first game coming off of their first loss of the 2024 season, the Clarke University men's lacrosse team pulled out a 13-12 overtime victory over Herkimer College on Wednesday evening.
In a game that was filled with a lot of scoring runs, the Pride needed to find a game-tying goal with under two minutes remaining in the game as Henry La Belle fired a shot from the right side that appeared to be off the cross bar but officials credited the ball to cross the goal line to tie the game up at 12-12.
La Belle scored two of the first three goals of the game as part of his three-goal game as he was one of four CU players to finish with multi-goal games as Ryder Chaba finished with a game-high tying four goals as he netted the overtime winner just 16 seconds into overtime off of an assist from Matt Archer, who finished wth a game-high eight points with three goals and five assists.
The Generals opened the game with the first two goals before Clarke answered with three-straight to close the first quarter up 3-2 but Herkimer went into halftime up 5-4 in the middle of a run where they would score five-straight goals to lead 8-4 and eventually up 9-5 before Clarke would score six of the next seven goals between the third and fourth quarters that included Chaba's other three goals, both just Justyse White's two goals and an own goal put into HC's own net to tie the score at 10-10 at the time.
A pair of Herkimer attackers matched Chaba's game-high four goals as Ian Weir and Rick Attleson both found the back of the net four times with Attleson added an assist.
Part of what allowed the Pride to hang around was their success in faceoffs as the combination of Abraham Agundez and Doug Powless finished 20-of-26 at the dot, only losing one faceoff in the second half and overtime combined with that only loss coming as a fourth quarter violation.
Clarke men's lacrosse will remain in non-conference play when they host Cornell College for a 1:00 p.m. CT opening faceoff at Burrows Field on Saturday, Mar. 16.
