DUBUQUE, Iowa - Hits were hard to come by for whoever was on the losing side during Tuesday's doubleheader between Clarke University softball and Mount Mercy University at Veterans Memorial Park.
The hightlight of the night for the Pride fans was the no-hitter turned in by sophomore pitcher Malarie Huseman as she shut down Mount Mercy in Tuesday's second game that ended in a 4-0 win for CU.
Huseman struck out seven and also walked seven but did not allow a hit to the Mustangs over the seven innings on her way to her first career no-hitter at the college level.
The walks never hurt Cu or Huseman on the scoreboard and that was most important in the top of the seventh as the bases were loaded by Mount Mercy to allow the tying run to come to the plate but Huseman was able to force back-to-back pop ups in the infield to keep any runs off the board and secure the no-no.
Offensively, Clarke was able to score three of their four runs in an unearned fashion, taking advantage of Mount Mercy's miscues as the lead was 1-0 from the second to the fifth inning but they were able to add a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to add some insurance runs.
The first game of the day was very favorable to Mount Mercy as they earned a 10-0 win by the run rule in five innings where the Pride only managed one hit in the game.
Clarke will prepare for their final two doubleheaders of the season when they host Grand View and William Penn this Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park with Friday's games against the Vikings scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. CT.
