Pride play second-straight overtime game but fall 8-7 to Cornell
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Closing out their spring break on home turf, the Clarke University men's lacrosse team fell 8-7 to Cornell College on Saturday afternoon.
A back-and-forth contest saw only one goal scored in the first quarter when Aiden Gudenkauf scored less than 30 seconds into the game but the next goal wouldn't come for another 17 minutes of game action when Henry La Belle made it 2-0.
The Rams would score the next four unanswered to lead 4-2 before Ryder Chaba would get CU back on the board with just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter to enter halftime down 4-3.
After an even 1-1 third quarter that saw Abraham Agundez score his first goal in a Clarke uniform, Cornell would grow their lead to its largest at 7-4 as late as the 6:30 mark when Doug Powless would score the next two goals about three minutes apart to draw CU within one when Chaba would follow up with a goal just 10 seconds later to tie it at 7-7 eventually sending the game into overtime.
Cornell would win the opening face off of overtime while also drawing a penalty on the Pride to get an man-up opportunity as they would cash in on a Tyler Foster goal for the win less than 30 seconds into overtime.
Foster finished with a goal and an assist as he was assisted on the game-winning goal by Luke Baldwin, who finished as the Rams' leading point scorer with two goals and an assist on the game.
Powless led the Pride in points, adding two assists along with his two goals, as CU goalie Jack Fritz finished with a game-high 10 saves on his 18 shots faced with Cornell outshooting Clarke 36-19 in total in the game.
Clarke men's lacrosse will hit the road for their next game when they travel to Rock Island, Ill. to face Augustana College next Wednesday night for a 6:00 p.m. CT opening face off.
