Buzzer beater downs Pride in 83-82 loss to Missouri Valley

MARSHALL, Mo. - For the second-straight game, the Clarke University men's basketball team had a late victory taken away by a last second made shot by their opponent as Missouri Valley College earned an 83-82 win on Saturday.

With about a minute remaining, the Pride led 80-77 before Jace Lance hit a three pointer from the left win to tie the game where the shot clock would be turned off for CU's final possession.

Working off of a ball screen, Jordan Lake found the open man in Chandler Dean on the left block as Dean hit the layup to regain a Clarke lead at 82-80 with just over four seconds remaining.

The Vikings did not call a timeout as they inbounded the ball to Lance where he was able to dribble just across half court, heave up a contested prayer that was answered as the ball banked in after the clock expired to send MVC fans home happy with the 83-82 final.

The entire game was tightly contested throughout with neither team ever leading by double figures as the Pride's largest lead was nine points in the first half and the Vikings largest lead coming very early in the game with a six-point advantage at 8-2.

Lance led all players with 27 points in the game as he added three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He was supported offensively by 15 off the bench from Cameron Lockett and 12 points from Tamarcus Butler as Lockett and Butler had eight and seven rebounds respectively.

For Clarke, Keith Johnson led the way with 25 points on 9-of-19 (47.4%) shooting from the field as he added six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocked shots. Jacob Fierst had another double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Dean was a rebound away from the double-double at 15 points and nine rebounds, and Biggie Luster finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

Pride men's basketball will return home for their next two games starting on Wednesday, Jan. 19 against Graceland University for a 7:30 p.m. CT scheduled tip for the second meeting with Graceland of the year.
